Picture
> In this section, you will find links to tools and resources designed to help you introduce the CANS/ANSA to families, including family handouts.  Brief descriptions are provided.  Click on the headings below for information and content.
Using the CANS and ANSA with Individuals and Families
It’s important to let families know that you are working together to do an assessment of their needs and strengths so that you can collaboratively develop a plan for their treatment...

CANS RATING WINDOWPANE-SCORING GUIDE
"The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment tool is intended to be administered collaboratively with children and families. The collaborative approach relies on clear communication and a commitment to building consensus among team members."
  • See CANS Rating Windowpane-Scoring Guide for more.

ASSESSING FOR NEEDS AND STRENGTHS
A complete understanding of the TCOM tools includes the ability to determine if a piece of information represents a Need or a Strength.
  • See the TCOM Needs and Strengths Tipsheet for a decision tree to help make this determination.

FAMILY HANDOUT: CHILD AND ADOLESCENT NEEDS AND STRENGTHS
The CANS and ANSA are a part of our assessment process that is aimed at clarifying your story, allowing for easier communication and providing us with a transparent way to talk about what’s going well and what you’d like to be better.
  • See CANS Family Handout for more.
  • See ANSA Handout for more.

USING THE CANS/ANSA WITH CAREGIVERS & FAMILIES (RATING SCALE)
"What is the CANS/ANSA? This is a tool to gather information about your child’s needs and strengths. How is the CANS/ANSA used? A rating scale is used for each question/item which will determine the action level for each item."
  • See Using the CANS/ANSA with Caregivers & Families (Rating Scale) for more.

USING THE CANS AND ANSA WITH INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES
"You may be unsure about when and how to introduce the CANS or ANSA measure to an individual and/or the family and how to engage them in the process of completing the tool. Likewise, there are often questions about how the CANS/ANSA may be used to discuss their clinical conceptualization and engage in treatment planning with the individual/family."
