Developmentally Informed CANS Assessment Practices

​WestCoast Children’s Clinic recently held a training session that provided valuable insights into how to better engage with children, youth, and families by centering their unique developmental and cultural contexts. Trainer Bethany Blank, LCSW is a TCOM Human Services Program Specialist with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and shared both her professional and personal perspectives on navigating services with developmental needs. 

When working with individuals who may communicate differently, our approach should be clear, respectful, and adaptable. Here are the core guidelines:

• Ask for Preferences: Always ask the individual how they prefer to be communicated with.  Author Jordan Scott’s book, “I Talk Like a River” reminds us that we all communicate in different ways.  

• Speak Directly: Address the person directly, rather than speaking only to their companion or interpreter.
• Keep it Simple: Avoid complex sentences or professional jargon.
• Be Patient: Use a normal tone and rate of speech, allowing the individual plenty of time to process information and respond.
• Use Active Listening: Focus entirely on what they are saying and avoid the urge to interrupt or finish their sentences.
• Stay Honest: If you do not understand something, ask clarifying questions rather than pretending to follow along. 

​Adapting Your Approach by Age and Need
Engagement isn't "one size fits all.

• For Young Children: Use developmentally appropriate framing, such as visuals like emojis, color zones, CANS Cards, or "buckets" to help them express their needs without needing to explain them verbally. 

• For Older Youth: Focus on self-determination. Youth experience better outcomes when they are active partners in their care, with their "voice and choice" at the center of shared decision-making.
• Adapt Communication Tools: Offer preferred alternative methods like writing, assistive aids or technology. 

​The Heart of Engagement: Support, Not Judgment
Ultimately, engagement is about building a shared vision. The goal of assessment is not to label or judge, but to determine where support is needed. By listening with empathy and being open to different perspectives, we can build the trust necessary for meaningful change.
